The hardest part of arranging a cleaner for an elderly parent is rarely finding the cleaner. It is the conversation where your mother explains that she has cleaned her own house for fifty years and does not intend to stop.
Families who make this work tend to get there sideways. The cleaner comes 'to help with the heavy jobs', the ones nobody enjoys at any age: ovens, bathrooms, floors. The dusting stays with your parent. Framed that way, help is not a verdict on her independence, and after a month the visits usually widen on their own.
Consistency matters more than price here
For most cleaning jobs, an agency rota with changing staff is a minor irritation. For an older person it can sink the whole arrangement. The value is a familiar face at a predictable time, someone your parent comes to know and, often, look forward to. When you ring firms, make this the first question: can you guarantee the same cleaner each visit? Some companies build their service around exactly this and will say so plainly.
Agree the boundaries in writing, gently. Which rooms, whether cupboards and the fridge are included, what happens with post and paperwork (usually: nothing, leave it where it lies). A short written scope protects the cleaner as much as your parent, because 'she moved my things' is the most common friction in these arrangements.
Money, keys and checking in
Decide early who pays and how, because pensioners handing cash to a stranger every week is where worry creeps in for everyone. Most firms will invoice a family member directly, which quietly removes the whole subject from the kitchen table. On keys, prefer a key safe you control over spare keys in circulation.
Then check in, but not constantly. A call after the first visit, another after the fourth. What you are listening for is not the state of the skirting boards, it is whether your parent talks about the cleaner by name.
