The builders sweep up, load the van and shake your hand, and the house looks almost done. Then the light comes through the window the next morning and every surface has a grey film again. That film is why after-build cleaning exists as its own trade.
Plaster, brick and silica dust is finer than anything a domestic vacuum is designed for. It hangs in the air for days, settles, and gets stirred back up by footsteps and radiators, which is why a room cleaned on Friday looks dusty again on Monday. It also wrecks ordinary vacuum motors and clogs their filters. Cleaning firms bring machines with fine-dust filtration and, more importantly, they expect to clean some surfaces twice.
That expectation is built into how the trade quotes. A proper after-build clean is often staged: a first pass once the trades are out, then a finishing pass, sometimes called a sparkle clean, a few days later once the airborne dust has settled. Firms that quote one visit for a full renovation are either pricing the disappointment in or leaving you to discover it.
The visible work is floors, glass and paint splatter. The work you are really paying for is the detail: inside every cupboard and drawer that stood open during the works, window frames and tracks, door tops, light fittings, extractor grilles, and labels and adhesive residue scraped from new glass and sanitaryware. Ask whether snag-marking is included, some firms will note paint misses and silicone gaps as they go, which your builder then fixes on the snagging visit.
Book the first pass for after the last trade leaves, not between trades, or you pay to clean a workshop. If flooring was just fitted or sealed, tell the cleaning firm what was laid and when, because sealed floors and fresh oil finishes have waiting periods before wet cleaning.
Firms that do after-build work usually say so in their listing. Compare cleaning companies near the property or describe the renovation and get quotes, mention the floor finish, the number of rooms the trades touched, and whether you want the two-stage clean. The two-stage answer tells you who has done this before.
